Drew grew up in the Pittsburgh, PA area where he played high school soccer at Pine-Richland High School. There he captained the team for 3 years while garnering numerous accolades as a Regional All-American, All-State, PG North Player of the Year and nominated for Gatorade Player of the Year twice. He also played for various different clubs in the area as well as playing for the USSDA Cleveland Internationals.  After high school, Drew went on to play Division 1 soccer at Penn State as an outside midfielder where he was included in the B1G All-Freshman team and also won the regular season B1G championship. In his sophomore year, he earned B1G Ten Player of the Week and Phillysoccer.com Player of the Week for a multiple points game vs. Michigan State, as well as another B1G regular season championship. He finished his junior and senior season ranked in the top 10 in the country.
